What is egg donation?

Egg donation is an Assisted Reproduction Technique that allows couples with infertility, whether the problem originates in the ovaries or from genetic abnormalities in the mother, to achieve pregnancy.

It is a voluntary, anonymous, and altruistic act, just like all other human organ and fluid donations, however, the law states that donors shall receive financial compensation for travel expenses and the treatments that they will undergo.

What are the requirements for being an egg donor?

You must be between 18 and 35 years old and be physically and mentally healthy. During your FIRST VISIT, a gynaecologist will thoroughly explain the entire process and will get you to fill out a basic health questionnaire. During the following visit, we will conduct a psychological evaluation, a gynaecological check-up, and a blood test to ensure that you’re in good health for donating.

What does the law say?

The Spanish Law 14/2006 on Assisted Reproductive Techniques is the legal framework which regulates:

The application of scientifically certified and clinically indicated human assisted reproduction techniques.
The application of human assisted reproduction techniques to prevent and treat genetic disorders, provided that there are sufficient diagnostic and therapeutic guarantees and that they are duly authorised under the provisions of this Law.
The circumstances and requirements for the use of cryopreserved human gametes and preembryos.
The Spanish Royal Decree 412/1996 sets out the mandatory examination protocols for donors and users related to human assisted reproductive technology and regulates the creation and organisation of the National Register of Gamete and Preembryo Donors for human reproduction purposes.

The Spanish Royal Decree 318/2016, of the 5th of August, which regulates the authorisation procedure for activities that advertise and promote the donation of human cells or tissues states that:

Donations shall be anonymous, guaranteeing that the identity of the donors is treated as confidential information by gamete banks as well as, where applicable, by the clinics’ donor and activity registers.

How many times can I donate?

According the current Spanish Law on Assisted Reproduction, the maximum number of children born from the same donor cannot exceed six.

What is the treatment like?

If all of the results are normal we can begin treatment on the second or third day of your period. This treatment normally lasts 8-12 days, during which time the donor will come into the Clinic on a daily basis to monitor her hormone stimulation and ovarian response.

Egg retrieval or FOLLICULAR PUNCTURE is performed in the operating theatre and under anaesthesia (sedated). You will have to stay in the Clinic for 2-3 hours to undergo this procedure.

Signing the informed consent form is mandatory.
